There were significantly increased numbers achieving A* - B grades, with almost half of its students achieving the highest grades. Across Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related subjects, Newcastle Sixth Form College achieved some fantastic results, with 83.3% of Physics A level students achieving A* - B grades.

These results put Newcastle Sixth Form College in the top 25% performing schools and colleges nationally offering A levels with students making excellent performance, as shown by ALP (A Level Performance System).

These results build on the college’s success in helping students who progressed to university last year. Analysis by the respected Sixth Form Colleges Association has shown that students at Newcastle Sixth Form College were 10% more likely to progress to universities based on their GCSE’s than students elsewhere.

Newcastle Sixth Form College celebrated the best results ever for nearly 500 students last week, and achieved a significant increase in the percentage of students achieving A*- B grades at A level. With almost half of all students sitting exams this summer achieving the highest grades at A levels, it is a fitting outcome following the huge effort and achievements of students, staff and parents this year.

Gerard Garvey, Principal of Newcastle Sixth Form College, said: “We are very proud of our students, and these results are a fantastic outcome for everyone involved. We have an inclusive intake at Newcastle Sixth Form College and so the growth in our students’ achievements in the highest grades is an exceptional outcome for everyone. These results underline the hard work and commitment by the students who are now able to progress to a wide range of exciting opportunities.”

The college performance across science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) related subjects were particularly positive, with excellent results in physics and mathematics. 83.3% of all students sitting A Level Physics achieved A* - B and in mathematics over three quarters of students achieved A* - C grades. As a result students have gained places on a wide range of competitive courses including, medicine, neuroscience and mathematics at renowned institutions including Cambridge, Oxford, London and Durham.

Graham Davison, physics teacher at Newcastle Sixth Form College, commented on the success of physics students. He said: “This year’s group have been particularly focused on their progression to higher education, and a number of our students have already secured sponsored progression into higher education with major engineering groups backing them.”

Just one of the students celebrating last week was Elise Elliott whose incredible results mean she is just one of the college’s students leaving NSFC this year to attend Oxbridge Universities, having secured a place on the Natural Sciences course at Cambridge University.

Elise achieved three A* and one A grade and is a former pupil at Ashington High School. She said: “I have loved my time at NSFC.”
