Newcastle Sixth Form College students quiz politicians on Europe referendum

17 May

A Level Government and Politics students had the chance to quiz UKIP North East MEP Jonathan Arnott and Labour representative John Howarth during a spirited debate on the upcoming in-out referendum.

The panellists took turns in covering topics including immigration, the economy, employment and the NHS during the hour long event, with both guests taking questions from the audience of Newcastle Sixth Form College students.

The visit formed part of efforts by the Newcastle Sixth Form College to increase political engagement among young people and took place as the issue of the UK’s membership of the EU is one of the hottest political topics, with only weeks to go until the final vote.

Student Emma Harvey, 18, said: “I really enjoyed the debate. It was a good opportunity to hear different sides of the in-out argument and it’s given me more to think about before I use my vote.”
