Social Mobility Foundation Programme Success

02 May

We are proud to announce that a record number of our students have successfully gained places on the Social Mobility Foundation Programme.

The Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) is a charity which aims to provide opportunities and networks of support for 16-17 year olds who are unable to get them from their schools or families, in order to make a practical improvement in social mobility for young people from low-income backgrounds.

As well as extending support to students throughout university across 11 career sectors (Accountancy, Architecture, Banking & Finance, Biology & Chemistry, Business, Engineering & Physics, Law, Media & Communications, Medicine, Politics, and Technology) SMF now run programmes to support young people wherever they live in the UK.

Our students have been placed on one of two programmes:

Aspiring Professionals - Taking place in Newcastle, students will receive mentoring from an industry professional, tailored skills sessions and workshops, support with their university application and an internship from a top employer.

Residential Programme -  this involves spending two weeks in London over the summer on an internship with a top employer, while experiencing life in the capital and being mentored by an industry professional. We have students who will be working in banking with J.P. Morgan, engineering with CH2M Hill and medicine with a top London hospital.

Both schemes had strict entry criteria with students needing to have achieved a minimum of 5 A grades at GCSE and be predicted ABB at A Level.

Congratulations to all students involved on such a huge achievement! We look forward to hearing about their experiences over the summer.
