New Writing North Workshop

Special guests from New Writing North give budding novelists a boost at Newcastle Sixth Form College

03 December

English Literature students enjoyed a flash fiction creative workshop with writers Amy Mitchell and Carina Rodney; the first in a series of New Writing North Taster Sessions at Newcastle Sixth Form College.

The project is part of the college’s Enrichment, Employability and Progression programme, which is an integral part of a student’s programme of study at the college. Every Wednesday, staff and students take part in a range of activities outside of the classroom with the aim of enriching the student experience and boosting CVs in preparation for University or meaningful employment.

The programme offers a wide range of activities, from working in the community, climbing and running clubs to art appreciation as well as the New Writing North project.
Students were left feeling inspired by the project:

“It’s really inspiring to speak to people who have succeeded in the field that we are interested in. Their feedback on our own work is really valuable too and gives us confidence.”

Lauren McDonald, 17, A Level English Literature and Language, Film Studies and Media Studies.

“Having Amy and Carina in the Creative Writing Enrichment was very beneficial. It was positive as well as enjoyable to meet and work with other writers as well as both people who are involved in the writing industry.”
Jonathan Kennedy, 17, A Level Classics, History and Government and Politics.

“The session was very helpful and inspiring.”
Eve Connelly, 16, A Level Drama and Theatre Studies, English Literature, Geography and Sociology.
